On playing it, you hear a continual light crackling or popping, which doesn't sound to me like dirt or wear - it's both lighter and sharper than that, if you can imagine what I mean. You can actually see numerous pits in the surface. I would declare the Tuff Gong version the hands-down winner, except that it's pressed on extremely crappy vinyl. (You can hear a few tape dropouts, too.) Much more dynamic and interesting, and a lot easier on the ears. The Tuff Gong has less bass, and you can easily hear into the layers of the recording, including the burrus drums in the lower midrange. The Shanachie applies quite a bass boost - so much so that the album sounds like a duet between Rita and the bass player, with only studio murk sandwiched between. For Fans Of: Rita Marley, Queen Latifah, Judy. Then I found out they are mastered differently, too. Carol's potent flow and strong singing make for a double threat worth checking out. Until yesterday I though these were the only differences. The Tuff Gong is, well, tuffer, an unsmiling Rita looking down at you with calm authority from atop a mountain of authentic Dread. The Shanachie makes Rita look like a Kewpie doll - very cute and non-threatening. The Shanachie has Rita's hit "One Draw" instead of the Tuff Gong's "The Beauty Of God's Plan". Īs for the two LP versions, they have different running orders. (Along with the Grateful Dead and a few other things.) I turned to WFIKI for spiritual sustenance more than once when the going got tough. When I was in college in the early to mid-'80s, reggae was the soundtrack of life for me and the people I lived with. I should explain that this album is a favorite of mine. Here's an answer to a question no one's asked: Which is the better LP version of this album, the US Shanachie or the Jamaican Tuff Gong? (The only CD version I've seen is the Shanachie, so there you have no choice.)
